Essential Functions
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
• Leading beginner youth orchestra rehearsals (3 hour rehearsal, 40 week schedule on Saturdays) and implementing curriculum informed by El Sistema and teaching artist (TA) curriculum and pedagogy.
• Additional 6 to 10 hours per week of preparation and communication with TAs, managers, and other constituents.
• Preparing orchestra for 2 to 3 concerts per year.
• Finding and arranging repertoire.
• Collaborating with the Education Department and the Harmony Project in program design elements such as curriculum, pedagogy, concerts, special guest artist visits, and other special events/projects related to the youth orchestra.
• Communicating in a timely manner with teaching artists about weekly orchestra rehearsal preparation.
• Attending TA professional development sessions and visiting group lessons on a regular basis to help connect orchestra to group lesson work.
• Communicating as a ‘spokesperson’ with various stakeholders associated with the EXPO Center Youth Orchestra, such partners’ staffs and boards, the musicians, program parents and stakeholders.
• Preparing students to rehearse with Philharmonic guest conductors.
Requirements
• Demonstrated excellent musicianship and artistry as a conductor and teacher.
• A minimum of three years of professional experience in an arts organization working in the field of arts education with a 4-year undergraduate degree or equivalent experience required.
• Extensive experience working with beginner string, brass, and woodwind students, and with children from diverse ethnic and economic backgrounds.
• Strong understanding of El Sistema, youth orchestra repertoire, beginning instrumental curriculum, and teaching artist pedagogy.
• Ability to work effectively with a diverse team on curriculum, and program and concert design.
• Ability to effectively communicate with multiple constituent groups including general public, partner organizations, teaching artists, students, and parents.
• Ability to embrace, embody, and reflect Youth Orchestra LA values such as excellence, community, and creativity.
• Flexible, creative, and innovative in approach to program and concert design.
• Interest and ability to be a motivational mentor/role model for students, parents, and teaching artists.
• Ability to work under frequent observation.
• Experience working with a cultural institution as a teaching artist a plus. |
