Elementary Music Teacher (Pres – 4th Grade) – All Boys’ School

Our Mission

We are the first public charter school for boys in Washington, DC. During the 2010-11 school year, we will serve preschool (3 year olds) to 4th grade boys from DC’s inner city. Our college preparatory mission provides an exceptional education that prepares our scholars for academic mastery and achievement. Music Teacher
• Instructs students in vocal and instrumental music and fosters appreciation of all forms of music.
• Demonstrates ability to teach music in a way that is interactive and hands-on.
• Plans highly engaging, standards-based lessons to develop students’ ability to construct meaning and develop understand of music theory and concepts.
• Provides well-planned, high quality music instruction aligned with effective practices in boys’ education.
• Develops rigorous music curricula and instructional materials that are tightly aligned to Septima Clark’s benchmarks and DC Music Standards.
• Presents students with new ideas and concepts through a variety of strategies, inspires, and guides them to explore, express and uncover new music-related ideas of their own.
• Secure age and program appropriate materials to support student instruction and learning.
• Presents professional development in music-based topics for teachers.
• Promotes the music program through school-wide concerts and recitals that demonstrate quantifiable conceptual results and outcomes for students.
• Create and foster a constructive environment by communicating and working in a positive, professional manner.
• Establish and maintain strong communication with staff, parents, and families.
• Communicate in a timely fashion with Head of School/Director of Curriculum and Instruction about any relevant classroom matters and student performance.
• Perform other duties and responsibilities as required.

Qualifications
A belief in a highly structured, predictable, environment for children, in a no-excuses classroom. Possess a Bachelor’s degree in Music Education or Music (Early Childhood/Elementary focus required). Highly Qualified status in elementary music education is mandatory. Have at minimum of three years of elementary music teaching experience in an urban elementary school. Salary is based on experience, certification, and educational attainment.
