We operate two charter schools in Los Angeles serving 310 low income students in grades 5 – 9, expanding next year to nearly 500 students in grades 5 – 10. We try to teach our students to be conscientious, compassionate, and creative. We are big believers in camp. In fact, if the entire middle school operation could be conducted as a camp, we’d do it. Unfortunately, we haven’t yet figured out a way to do that, but we do take our kids on about 3 camping trips each year. A beginning of the year 4 night orientation camp, a 2 night winter camp, and a 7 night end of the year camping experience (to places like Havasupai Indian Reservation outside the Grand Canyon and Bryce and Zion National Parks.) One of the most important parts of these camps are our nightly campfires where we teach our students songs that can be sung accompanied by an acoustic guitar. We also do skits and tell stories. We’re looking for somebody who can lead these campfires for us. We’re also able to turn the “campfire leader” position into a full time job by having the person teach guitar (or other forms of music) to our students next year. No teaching credential is required. Some experience running campfires is desired, but the passion and willingness to try is all it may take. Your interview will likely consist of a “mock campfire” situation where you’ll be asked to tell a story and lead a song to a group of our students. We are looking for somebody who can potentially start immediately but definitely by the last week of May to prepare for two camping trips this coming June (Big Bear and Arizona/Utah).
