This vacancy was posted on 10/14/09 Mentor Position Summary: Mentors act as role models for youth members and visitors and help them to shape their involvement, exploration and self-education at the Music Clubhouse. During open studio time, mentors welcome and provide assistance to the young people who visit the Music Clubhouse, answering their questions, problem solving and providing general support on basic rhythm section instruments (piano, bass, guitar, drums). Mentors are critical to the Clubhouse’s mission of building youth confidence through the development of relationships, skills, knowledge and abilities – all through the exploration and expression of music.
Qualifications: Candidates must…
- Be relaxed, friendly, service-oriented people of enjoy teens and music;
- Have very strong interpersonal skills and demonstrate the ability and commitment to responsibly and cooperatively support urban youth;
- Demonstrate skills and/or experience with education, music, recording techniques;
- Work cooperatively with the Director and with the team of volunteers and staff;
- Bilingual candidates are encouraged to apply
Responsibilities: Mentors are responsible for their own transportation. Specific responsibilities include:
- Teaching piano, voice, and possible other rhythm section lessons and ensembles. (training provided)
- Welcoming youth to the Clubhouse and orientating them to rules/details of the program
- Providing support for youth exploration, creativity and expression
- Answering questions, giving feedback; coaching and encouraging youth
- Assisting in weekly lessons, trainings on ALL instruments
- Monitoring safety of youth, equipment, instruments and materials
- Providing feedback to Clubhouse Director
- Participating in Clubhouse events
Salary: $9.00 hourly; 15-20 hours weekly
