Middle Eastern Music Specialist

About the job

Provide regional expertise about popular and traditional Middle Eastern music for commercial entertainment products, including Arabic-language expertise, as well as guidance on targeting, acquisition, input and editing of music data relevant to the Middle East.

Responsibilities include:
- Market analysis of local buying and listening habits
- Targeting, acquisition, input and data-quality tasks related to Middle Eastern music
- Creation and implementation of standards for Arabic and transliterated data


JOB REQUIREMENTS:

The ideal candidate will:

- Have professional or academic experience with Middle Eastern popular music genres and artists, and experience working with Arabic data

- Fluent in spoken and written Modern Standard Arabic

- Be familiar with regional commercial music (labels, aggregators, sales outlets, genres) and be a savvy web researcher

- Be able to make regional contacts

- Have excellent basic computer and data entry skills, including Microsoft Word and Excel

- Have basic understanding of database operations and data access methods.

- Be able to work independently, with little or no direct supervision, surfacing problems or issues for approval as necessary.

- Be detail oriented and able to establish, communicate, and follow agreed upon project priorities.


QUALIFICATIONS:

B.S., B.A., or equivalent experience in field related to Middle Eastern musical culture and/or Arabic language studies.


PLUSES:

Linguistic and phonetic coursework

Familiarity with spoken/written Arabic dialects

Familiarity with various forms of Arabic transliteration

Practical database knowledge (Oracle, PLSQL, SQL Server, SQL, etc.) or programming languages useful for data analysis (such as PERL)
