About the job
We are an opera seeking an Associate Technical Director. The Technical Department oversees all technical details related to the creation and construction, documentation, maintenance and operation of New Productions, Touring Productions, Presentations, and Special Events. The Associate Technical Director is an essential part of this process by assisting the Assistant Manager, Technical with the management of stage operations.
Primary Responsibilities:
-Assisting with the management of stage operations.
-Working with stage department heads to help coordinate day to day operations, maintaining and repairing stage machinery and helping to budget and track stage labor and materials.
-Working with the rest of the Technical Department on the implementation of New Productions, especially as they impact daily stage operations.
-Assuring the safety of stage operations by staying abreast of current and developing industry standards and guidelines.
-Developing, implementing and monitoring safety protocols, procedures and training programs.
-Attending rehearsals and performances as directed.
-Acting as the principal Technical Liaison for Special Events, Presentations and House Rentals.
-Helping to coordinate schedules, manpower, and budgets for special events and guest performances.
Qualifications and Skill Requirements:
-A working knowledge of Opera is required.
-A terminal degree in Theater, Design, Engineering, Architecture, or equivalent professional experience is required.
-Extensive industry knowledge and experience with all aspects of technical backstage operation is required, including familiarity with union contracts.
-A minimum of 5-7 years experience in a technical production setting is required.
-A solid fundamental knowledge of standard scenery construction, handling, and rigging methods as well as knowledge of standard theatrical lighting techniques is essential.
-Experience with standard technical and theatrical drafting procedures is required.
-An ability to clearly communicate technical and artistic concepts in writing is essential.
-Problem solving skills, including the ability to synthesize and evaluate solutions in three-dimensional space, are required.
-Interpersonal and communication skills are crucial, as well as the ability to work on a team in a fast-paced, detail-oriented workplace.
Other necessary skills:
-Time and resource management, and the ability to multitask and prioritize.
-Computer literacy is essential, including MS Office applications and Adobe Photoshop and Acrobat.
-Computer Aided Drafting (Autodesk AutoCAD) experience is desirable.
-Experience working in a 3D drafting environment is also desirable.
