Masters at Work Lecture at Red Bull Music Academy
Friday, March 16th, 2012More music industry advice and tips from veterans of the biz.
The Red Bull Music Academy (RBMA) is a series of music events where young newcomers to the world of the music business (producers, singers, arrangers, DJs and musicians) take part in two week’s worth of studio sessions, live performances, workshops, lectures, mentoring and more from some of the top composers, engineers, label execs and performers in the industry. The series started in 1998 in Berlin, moves to a new city each year (2011 saw Madrid host, 2012 will take place in New York), and is additionally supported and promoted by smaller ‘sessions’ – club nights and concerts across the globe.
The lecture below is from two industry veterans known as Masters At Work. ‘Little’ Louie Vega and Kenny ‘Dope’ Gonzalez have recorded, produced, performed, arranged and remixed together for over 20 years, and have earned fans in house, hip hop, funk, broken beat, African, soul, jazz, and many other music genres. They have worked with musicians such as Roy Ayers, George Benson, Jocelyn Brown, Tito Puente, and members of the Salsoul Orchestra, as well as hitting the number one spot on the US Dance chart (twice), and picking up a Grammy nomination… three times.
In the video, XLR8R’s Shawn Reynaldo sits down with them on the couch during Red Bull Music Academy’s ‘New York City to SF Bay’ lecture series in San Francisco to discuss the start of their careers and dissolving the barriers between genres.
Other lecturers have included global music icons such as Adam Freeland, Bob Moog, Carl Craig, Chuck D, Derrick Carter, Godfather, Greg Wilson, James Holden, Jazzy B, Larry Heard, MIA, Mark Ronson, Norman Jay MBE, Peter Hook, Questlove, Skream, and Tim Westwood.
