Songs To Be Thankful For: A Holiday PlaylistPosted on November 21st, 2012 by Thomas in Offbeat, Playlists
The holiday season is upon us yet again. It is a time for giving great thanks for the special things that fill our lives with joy, fulfillment and laughter. Of course, it’s not always easy to find time for such thanks, as the holiday season is also a time of great shopping, great cooking, great driving and great sleeping. As Music Jobs is always looking for ways to help you out, we thought we’d compile a list of some songs that do all the thanking for you. Happy holidays!
The Heptones‘ ask the ultimate question, “What is the meaning of life?”, and with their characteristic smooth, soulful harmonies, yearning lyrics and mellow rhythm, they offer a simple and tender response that really hits home during the holidays.
Neil Young‘s dreamy, sweetly sincere love song is tinged with a bittersweet nostalgia that makes it feel timeless. Fun Fact: That slow, sweeping sound heard throughout the song was made using a straw dustbroom.
This is a darker kind of holiday song. Folk legend John Prine, a songwriter’s songwriter, masterfully tells the story of a prison inmate reminiscing about a loved one during the holidays. Prine’s lyrics are coherent and poignant enough to put you in the shoes of his narrator, making you feel especially thankful this holiday season.
A long time has passed since Eminem sampled Dido‘s song for his hit “Stan”. Now the song can finally stand on it’s own, free of Em’s slightly…darker twist on it. This quietly heartwarming song about being thankful features an unforgettable chorus (albeit it is more remembered for its verse, thanks to You-Know-Who).
Finally, the ultimate song of thankfulness. Louis Armstrong puts down the trumpet for a moment to remind us of the simple, splendid small things in life that more often than not go overlooked. Thank you, Louis.
This is the Music Jobs team saying thank you, enjoy the music and have a wonderful holiday!
